Dear Parishioners of Holy Cross Church:

As we go through this difficult trying time, the fear of the unknown feeds our uncertainty. The spread of this virus, which has become deadly to some, has placed us in an unfamiliar situation.
 We are used to an independent American culture. Now all of a sudden our basic freedoms are gone;   freedom to assemble, freedom of religion. We are told we cannot come to Mass on Sunday.
 Never in my 22 years as a priest did I ever think I’d see the day when a bishop would order priests not to offer Mass publicly. The bishops wish to follow what the civic authorities have asked us to do to minimize the spread of the virus. As a priest I will be obedient to the Bishop.

In these unprecedented times, which no one knows how long it will be, let us be positive and hopeful. We can continue our Lenten Observance by looking at ways to develop our own personal prayer, reflecting on the scriptures and seeking to grow deeper in our relationship with God. We can read the Sunday scriptures, participate in Mass via livestream online and make a spiritual communion.

 My mother would say: “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” To go without what we are accustomed, if anything, will make us appreciate it even more.

Be assured of my prayers for all of you as I offer private Mass. Please continue to support Holy Cross. We can go about a month without taking a collection, and then we won’t be able to pay basic bills like utilities and salaries.
